Auckland is becoming very international with the influx of migrants from all over the world, especially Asia. Statistics New Zealand reported that in 2013, almost 1 in 4 people (23.1 percent or 307,233 people) living in the Auckland region identified with one or more Asian ethnic groups, compared with 1 in 5 people (18.9 percent) in 2006.
The city celebrates two (if not more) international festivals other than Christmas, Easter or the New Year. The Lantern Festival is now in its 16th year as part of the Lunar New Year celebration. Dewali Festival is also a big event with turn out of tens of thousands of locals and visitors of all ages. Both are celebrations of Auckland’s ethnic diversity and a chance to enjoy and experience Chinese and Indian culture in their many exciting forms.
