Blogging 201, Day Two: Audit Your Brand
To build a strong brand, you have to assess your blog, top to bottom. Today you’ll figure out what’s inconsistent or unhelpful — and start to fix it.
Some of us have purely personal sites where we discuss the day-to-day, while others are trying to create an online presence or use our blogs as a springboard for other projects. No matter which describes you — or whether you’re a bit of both — you’re not just a blogger: you’re a brand.
I have never thought of myself as a blogger or a writer but I guess having a blog on WordPress makes me both a blogger and a writer. Anyone and everyone can be a writer, when you write an email or post any random thoughts on your facebook or even a text, you are a writer in your own right.
When looking for a platform for my autobiography, I found WordPress and I chose the Twenty Eleven Theme which to me looks very neat and simple for someone who isn’t that technologically savvy.
I chose this theme and the picture of the acorn (or more likely pinecone) for my blog. This image stood out, calling ‘choose me’. It looks ever so familiar because I have one lonely pinecone that stood proudly at the centre of my outdoor table. This pinecone represents me, though alone, is tough and has persevered all seasons. It was not forgotten when we shifted house, it came with me claiming its rightful place on that table. That is how important that pinecone is to me.
Goal 1 on Audit Your Brand
I would like to be able to have different or personalized images for some of my posts as I have seem some bloggers do have that feature so perhaps I will learn to figure that out. I am not too sure if this feature is available for a free domain such as what I am using now. If any bloggers read this perhaps someone can help me out with the simple step by step instructions to do this.

Besides my home page and my About page, I have created a few other pages with intention of making my blog interactive through links and promoting other blogs relevant to the topics – refer links below
Other than the first link, my other two links did not generate the responses I would hope for perhaps I have not promoted it enough. Now that this Day Two topic came up, I should perhaps have a timeline, example a day of the week or month that I call for participants to enter and interact on the challenge and create such widgets on my blog. Yes, this is food for thought though time is a constraint as I enjoy doing random posts every now and then and if I do have to spend certain amount of time calling for participants in either ‘explore your suburb challenge’ or remind bloggers to pingback their ‘wordless wednesday’ submissions to my blog, I may end up just being an organizer rather than a writer.
How true is it as I read what Michele W. wrote, ‘First, focus on your goal. Think back to yesterday: why do you blog? What do you want to accomplish? What is the thing you’d like your blog to be known for? This will be the lens you use to dissect your blog.’
Yes my blog has a presence on facebook which almost mirror what I posted on WordPress but my followers on facebook are almost 90% my friends, none of them are bloggers. I get quite a fair bit of links to WordPress from facebook but none if any of these readers comment on my post on WordPress and not even on facebook. They read (as I can see from the stats) but they are neutral and do not comment so these are probably not the readers I am looking for although it boost my stats. I would like to have readers who are interactive and who Like or Comment on my posts.
This assignment calls for a change for ‘introducing changes that reinforce your brand’ such as
- Customize your widget titles and comment prompt.
- Use your own photos to create custom image widgets or a custom header.
- Add a text widget with a pithy description of your blog’s mission.
- Create an email address for your site, using your custom domain or a free yourgreatblogname@gmail address.
I am going to figure out how to customize my comment prompt right after publishing this assignment.
Blogging 201 is now on Day 5 but here am I still struggling to do my Day 2. Well, it’s better late than never.
